During the late 1970's the South African Government started issuing a new 13-digit identity number. As with the previous identity number, the new 13-digit identity number would also include racial classification. People who passed away before this date, would not have been issued the new identity number.
During the early 1990's the 13-digit identity number was changed to exclude racial classification. The newly issued identity number would also be a 13-digit identity number, with the only change being the last two digits.
